Google Business Profile

The Free Google Tool Most Local Businesses Underuse

If you run a local business and you only have time for one marketing tool, make it your Google Business Profile. It's free, and for many local businesses it drives more calls and direction requests than the website itself. Yet most profiles are half-finished. Here's how to get more from it.

Pick the right primary category

Your primary category is what Google uses most to decide which searches you appear in. Choose the one that matches your core business exactly, then add secondary categories for your other services so you show up for those searches too.

Fill in every field

Services, service areas, hours, attributes, a real description, and your website link. Google rewards complete profiles with more visibility. Empty fields are missed searches.

Add photos — and keep adding them

Profiles with recent photos get more clicks and calls. Real photos of your team, your work, and your storefront beat stock images every time. Add a few every month.

Collect and answer reviews

Ask every satisfied customer for a review, and reply to all of them — good and bad. An active review stream tells Google your business is alive and trusted, and it's often the deciding factor for the customer choosing between you and a competitor.

Post updates and offers

The posts feature lets you share promotions, events, and news right on your profile. It keeps the listing fresh and gives searchers a reason to pick you now.

Watch the Performance tab

Google shows you how many people found you, called, or asked for directions. Track it monthly so you can see what's working and where to push.
